2 Carey Street

The house at 2 Carey Street is a single storey timber and iron structure in the Federation Bungalow Style of architecture. It is unclear when the house was built but it appears to be dated to around 1910. The property was once known as Lot 4 situated on the corner of Carey and Malcolm Street. In 1931 the street number was 17 Carey Street.

Carey Street is one of Bunbury’s earliest residential streets, named after Nicholas Carey in the 1840s. Nicholas arrived in Western Australia in 1835.

The house was advertised for sale on 4 September 1907 by W. J (Jack) Buswell, the son of Joseph Buswell, a ticket-of-leaver and prominent businessman who owned a brick factory. Jack was on the Board of Health in 1907, was a committee member on the National Referendum Committee in 1916 and served for a term on the Bunbury Municipal Council in 1915-16 and was re-elected in 1922.

The Larkins family were long term occupants of this house. In 1931 it was owned and occupied by Horace Larkins. Horace still owned the house in 1941 but by 1951 ownership had been transferred to Constance Larkins. While ownership changed, Horace still lived there.
