9 Hayes Street

An example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture, 9 Hayes Street (originally Eileen Street), is a single storey, masonry house with an asymmetrical facade. It is unclear when this house was constructed.

In 1931, the house was owned by the estate of William Hayes and occupied by A. Rohens.

In 1944 the house was owned by Emily Eliza Swansen (reference).

By 1951, the house was owned by Alfred Oates and occupied by W. Froome. Alfred was educated in Bunbury as a child and received his junior certificate from the Diocesan Examination in 1915 (reference). Alfred also served in World War One and was recorded as sick in 1917 (reference).

The street is named for the Hayes family. In 1931, many of the lots in the street were owned by the estate of William Hayes, who purchased the land in 1897. William was born in Bunbury in 1861 and died in 1930 (reference).

In the early twentieth century, many of the residents in East Bunbury were railway and waterside workers.
